A 16-year-oldsecondary school student who won the
annual spelling bee competition is set to
become the one day governor of Lagos
state.
Since 2001 when the first winner of a
spelling bee competition organised for
public primary and secondary schools
in Lagos state was appointed as a 'one
day governor', the state has upheld the
tradition.
During the 2017 edition held on June 22,
16-year-old Bukola Zoffun, a female
student of the Awodi-Ora Secondary
High School Ajegunle, in Ajeromi-
Ifelodun Local Government Area,
emerged the winner.
Bukola who won the sum of N250,000
along with the coveted prize of
becoming the one-day governor of the
state for 2017, said she would champion
the course for girl-child education in
Lagos state.
Miss Bukola Zoffun won the spelling bee
competition and will become the one day
governor of Lagos state for 2017
Speaking on her win, Bukola said:
“ I have put in my best effort to have been
selected at the preliminary level and here
I am today a proud winner . I am very
happy to be part of this competition, and
I can tell you that this has given me
great exposure that will help me to
achieve my dream of becoming a lawyer.
As the winner of the competition, I will
have the opportunity to be the One-Day
Governor, and I will equally use this
platform to promote the need for girl
child education, because what I have
learnt so far is that every child has a
right to education. ”
Miss Zoffun poses with other the first and
second runners-up of the competition.
Bukola also praised her school teachers
who prepared her and other pupils
from her school, for the competition, in
the last six months.
Lagos state deputy governor, Dr Idiat
Adebule, who was represented by Mr
Lanre Ogunyemi, the chairman of the
committee on education at the Lagos
state House of Assembly, also praised
the effort of the teachers and
governments investment in education.
He also commended the participants for
their courage.
Apart from Bukola's prize, the first
runner-up, Miss Rosemary Ogidan of
Methodist Senior High School, Badagry,
won the cash prize of N150,000, while
the second runner-up, Master Philip
Daniel of Yewa Senior High school,
Agege, won N100,000.
